In this 5 day mini unit students were able to take a look at the things that are healthy and unhealthy in their life. They were also able to explore the question "What does it really mean for me to be healthy?"
Lesson 1:
What Makes Us Healthy? This is the first lesson in our Healthy Living unit. In this lesson students brain stormed ideas as a class on what the word healthy means. Then students took a "How Healthy Are You?" survey so they could take a look at and see some of their habits. Then students finished the class by getting into partners and making the choices on the paper red (unhealthy) or green (healthy) were students came together to determine as a whole class if it was healthy or not.

Together we went through the words and its meaning (which were also on the sheet) and then students got to work. They had their fill in the blank sheet along with their "Cheat Sheet" with the words and their meanings. With some time left we watched The Magic School Buses, "Inside Ralphie".

Healthy Foods and Food Guides. In lesson 3 students were divided into 5 groups. Each group was given one of the five food groups to look at. They had to write and draw anything that they could think fit in the category. Then as a class we completed the food pyramid worksheet and talked about what the food guide means. After students were instructed to work on two worksheets. A cut and passed of the food groups and a "fill my plate" where students we asked to draw they favorite meal that had all of the food groups on the plate.

Lesson 4:
What's in Food? Nutrition Labels. In today's lesson we talked about Nutrition Labels and what was on them. Together we talked about what was on them, what it means, and if anyone in their household looks at it before buying something from the store. Together we completed a practice page on how to read a label, and then for the rest of the class students could pick actual labels that teachers brought and write down/answer questions about them.

Lesson 5:
How Are We Going To Stay Healthy? In this last lesson, we explored what makes us healthy and how to stay physically active. Each student was given a card that said something about being healthy or unhealthy. Then they had to go to the corresponding side of the room that their passage fit into, healthy or unhealthy. Then we read them out as a class and decided if it belonged in that group. Students then worked on an "I recommend page" and completed a "I plan on staying healthy by.." page.
