In our Ecs 100 class, one assignment was to read and discuss two articles about any educational topic you found interesting. I decided to focus on my interest of music found in schools. I read two articles, talked about what was said in them, and responded to them with my own thoughts and experiences. I chose to focus on music because I have a strong connection with it as I participated in many music groups in school. I know how important it is to have music in the school system and that it is a great way to help people learn. There are many facts on the impact of music in schools that I did not know until after reading these, so here is your chance to see a few ways that music benefits our classrooms. Here are my responses to what I believe is a very important topic in our school system.
Article #1
Music can mean many thing, be many things, and can have an impact on many people. It can have many important effects on a young person’s life, so why not put music into schools. It has been known that music can have a strong mental, and emotional impact on students learning and their personal lives. I believe that more music should be put into schools to show the benefits that music has on our young minds.
The article Let There Be Music: Making a Case for Using Music in Schools to Enhance Relationships and Readiness for Learning by Irene G. Wilkinson, talks about the importance of music in our schooling system. Music is found everywhere, all around the world, so why not more commonly found in schools? As stated in the article it is believed listening to certain types of music can reduce stress, depression, anxiety, improve moods, enhance empathy, and compassion, but funding for music and the arts is increasing diminishing. When funding is discussed it is frequently the music programs to take a hit in reducing costs in our schools, when really these programs are the things we should try our hardest to save. Music is said have positive effects on cognition, enhance learning, reading and literacy skills, even more so with learning disabilities found in children. Researchers have shown it calms and enhances creativity, affects all emotions and helps heal the body and state of mind. The importance of music in neurological and emotional development and learning is shown through science, as it stimulates both the right and left side of the brain plus the limbic system which is responsible for long-term memory. While music’s rhythm and pitch are compatible with human brain wave patterns, it is proven it helps learn new material 3 to 5 times faster than with normal teaching methods. The Need for Music article talks specifically that music needs to be playing in school halls, throughout the day, in the early morning, before afternoon classes, and at the end of the day for around 5 to 10 minutes. This should also be done during silent readings and quiet study times. These simple things have been shown to raise performance level and productivity in the workplace, improving standardized test scores. Music should be fought for and used in schools everywhere.
A school that promotes and encourages music within there students, not only makes for a better community, but helps students understand and work towards dealing with other things such as their emotions. Whether it is just listening to music or it is actually learning how to play an instrument, students have a better chance of working through their emotions, or learning who they are if they have music in their life. Music in schools creates a sense of belonging, and family throughout a school community. I started learning music when I was 4 years old, playing the piano for 14 years of my life. When I was in grade 6 I joined band playing the clarinet, and then alto saxophone in jazz band. I was able to continue this up the end of high school. Throughout the four years there I played alto and tenor saxophone in four bands, and the best jazz band, along with pep band. For me music was an escape, somewhere for me to leave my stress from school and my personal life behind and focus on something that was important and that I was devoted to. Music also gave me a lot of confidence I did not have before. Having to audition to be in jazz band not only helped teach me how to focus and practice properly but showed me if you really want something the only person who could stop you is you. This gave me confidence as for two years I was able to be apart of the top jazz band in my high school, and in the second year I was even able to be the lead alto aswell. Knowing that I had worked so hard and got to what I wanted to achieve boosted my confidence alot and also was able to reduce my stress level in school. Music was able to help me with so many things in my life, so why can’t more schools provide strong support for music in there place of work. Even just listening to music provides a lot of support towards students and staff, but it seems that when schools need to make cuts music is always the first to go, but why? People do not realize the actual important that music can have on someone’s life. A lot of people believe that music is a waste, or when they think of music all they see is rap or maybe inappropriate songs, when really music is so much more. Music is a way of releasing stress, anxiety, and a great key to learning. I strongly agree that music has a big effect in learning within students. Students who show they have strong music influence in their life have enhance learning, like reading and literacy skills. People who have learning disabilities have shown that with music being introduced into their life their school work and understanding of what they are doing improves tremendously. This is important towards all student and their learning as music can been shown to help learn certain content 3-5 times faster than other schooling methods. I truly believe that music is extremely important in schools and can benefits students in many different ways. This article about music involvement is very important and has some great ideas towards what should be happening towards our schooling systems. The ideas found in this article should be put in place in all schools as it will improve the learning of students and will also help student cope and deal with stress, depression, anxiety, and much more. I believe that the impact of music found in schools is very important and music should be found more throughout school.

A Place for Music: The Importance of Music Education in the Public School System by Emily-Jane Hills Orford talks about the importance of music is the elementary grades from one- six. This article was a very good read and had some very good points towards music education. I strongly agree with this article and the message that it is sending. The article talks about many thing like the improvement of education in young students from grade one-six, especially in math, science, and engineering. I believe having music education at a young age will strongly improve general learning in all areas of education. Personally, I really got into music in my teen years and I believe it improved my learning and understanding of learning a lot better than previously in my education. If I was exposed to even more music education when I was younger, maybe I would have excelled better in my subjects of school in my elementary years. In my opinion music education is very important and really does make a difference in student learning. The article talks about how music needs to be returned to Canadian culture but what does that really mean, music education, history, learning how to play, or listening? I truly think music should be taught in all of these forms and more, but inside the article they do not mention enough about how or what we should be doing to introduce music into education or even the rest of society. This is a very good article that takes about education and the importance of it along with some people that had a big impact on it, but for me it does not go enough into the depths of music education and the importance that it creates in a young school setting. It starts out really strong talking about the importance of music education. But when talking about important people I found that is wonders a bit, in return it ends up just talking about the generals of education and how important it is instead of moving back to music education area. While obviously general education is important and it does connect to music in many ways it struggles a little to actually show the positives of music in young learning minds, along with examples. If the article would have focused more on how it would directly relate to music education personally it would have been a lot me intriguing. In the article it talks about how music is like or apart of someones culture, and being that we are to encourage one's culture education needs to access one of its most underappreciated subjects that not only relates to schools and learning but also everyone's personal life, and this is music. When I become a teacher music will be something I will try very hard to incorporate into the classroom like other teachers should also do. Whether it is playing music a couple times a day or incorporating music into subject areas/ what is being learned, I strongly believe music has a strong effect on the minds of students, and improves learning in the classroom. I agree with many things in this article and think that music education in schools especially starting at a young age is very important.
In the article A Place for Music: The Importance of Music Education in the Public School System by Emily-Jane Hills Orford, we see the importance of music of music influence found in young students learning. Music can help students release emotions and can improve learning scores in the classroom. Sadly in our school system, music is the first thing to go in budget cuts as people do not see the value in music in education. We need to keep music in our school alive and strong, because the loss of music in schools is the loss of important education.
