Diversity is a very important topic inside and out of the classroom. In a school setting it is very important that we realize diversity can be many different things like, knowledge, culture, beliefs, gender, identity, age, race, minorities, language and more. We need to recognize that everyone is different and that there is nothing wrong with that, but that it in fact makes our classrooms and school more interesting and we can use this to help students learn. It is very important to be aware in a school that everyone be included no matter who they are and for others to understand that as well. In class we talked about how diversity is difficult to talk about in many ways. There are so many different ways diversity is viewed and definitions but maybe there is not a right answer. Maybe diversity is so many things that we can not pin it down to one definition or way of looking at it.
Truth and Reconciliation
I was lucky enough in high school to have a teacher that was very passionate about Truth and Reconciliation. I learned a lot about the topic and how important it is to today's society. Truth and Reconciliation is a very important topic that schools are now talking about. Trying to apologize and make right what went wrong in the past with residential schools. This is just one example of diversity and the impact Canada had on it. In Canada’s history First Nations children were taken from their homes and put into schools run by churches. These schools were harsh as they forced them to learn English and many went home not able to communicate with their families because they were not allowed to speak their language and therefore lost it.They were to learn a new religion and forget their original one. There were maybe other things that they lost and the things that happened were no way ok. This was very traumatic and something that Canada is not proud of. Canada is just starting to apologize for what happened that one of the ways they are doing it is the Truth and Reconciliation Committee. The point of this was make known what happened, how wrong it was, and that we as a community are sorry for everything that has happened. They are starting at a very young age to teach about this so that new generations understand and can help repair what was done in the past.
