Over the past semester I have learned that Movement Education for young children if very important. In my KHS 139 class we talk about how important it is for young movers to learn basic movement skills correctly for proper development. It is crucial that children learn and have proper education when it comes to being active in school. While gym class is a key factor of this, it is still important to focus on the basic and fundamental movement patterns that kids need to learn. Playing sport in phys-ed classes is not always the best idea as some students have not mastered the skills to properly play. This in return makes students feel embarrassed and many dislike gym class because of this. Instead it is important to focus on “gymnastics” or “dance” units at a young age before playing sports, as these provide the basic movement skills to later on be able to play sport games. Teachers should base gym class on mini games or activities rather than sports.
In this class we were asked to create a project that would benefit students understanding of activity in schools, while teaching about important movement skills. The point of this project was to show that we understood the skills that were important to movement education. This was also to make sure that movement would be able to be put into classrooms themselves and other subject areas. Some groups made games to play in the classroom that brought movement into different subjects, while others games purely focused on movement skills.
For my group project we wanted to do something that would would affect the classroom for both students and teachers. We created an activity booklet that has many games/ ideas to improve movement and learning in the classroom. Our booklets name is "Let's Get Moving: Integrating Movement into the Classroom". For our booklet we came up with ten activities/games, new and old, to give children a break in the classroom. These activities could be changed and adapted from the 1- 3 grade level we focused on. Not only that but these activities can be changed to help teach different subjects and are a fun interactive way for the class to get involved in their learning while still learning how to be properly active. While these can be used as a sort of brain break activity base, teachers can also plan their classroom lessons around them as well. In our booklet we have a beach ball break, dice movement break, play on Simon says, dance breaks, copy that animal, yoga relaxers, minute in motion, freeze dance, math with extensions and sight words with music. We chose to create a booklet to help teachers or parents keep movement strong throughout young minds. These activities provide quick, easy ideas for adults to use and can be ready in know time at all.
